Lovers of Vietnamese beef noodle soup (aka Pho) will tell you of its addictive properties.  The combination of rice noodles, beef, fresh vegetables and herbs, all in a light yet deceptively complex broth can become a weekly-or-more habit for those who are in the know.  But at less than $10 a bowl (and sometimes less than $7!), who cares?  This is a habit that need not break the bank.

While East Vancouver, specifically Kingsway, is still considered the Lower Mainland’s Pho capital, its growing popularity has resulted in Vietnamese noodle shops popping up everywhere.

Mai’s Vietnamese Restaurant in Walnut Grove is truly a gem—located on the south side of 88^th Ave in the mall near Kin’s Farm Market, this place will please the palate of even the most discerning Pho connoisseur.  They also feature the standard vermicelli bowl with grilled pork, salad roll, spring roll, and an outstanding fried prawn appetizer (all of which are pictured below).

The weatherman is calling for sun, so bring along your family, Fido and a frisbee to enjoy the new park that borders the community.  Our showhomes and sales centre will be open, and Jenny and the sales team will be happy to answer any questions  you have.

Look for the giant inflatable JRFM Country Cat – you won’t be able to miss it.

On Tuesday March 2nd, the first homeowner’s at Time picked up their keys, unlocked their new front door, and moved into their new home.  A big congratulations to Christa and Russell from all of us at ParkLane Homes!  We couldn’t be happier for them. And, from the looks on their faces, they couldn’t be any happier, either.

 Sushi and salad together… why not?  Brown’s says they list it on their menu twice because they “think it’s that good”.  What they’re referring to is their sushi roll and Cowboy Salad combo for $14.  And for what you get (picture below) we say that’s great value.

 Intrigued by the sound of the Chili Lime Edamame, we decided to try a plate.  Instead of the normal sea salt that usually gets thrown on top, these pods had a light seasoning of chili, lime juice and togorashi. Describe the dish in as few words as possible? Zesty Orangey-lime Explosion. We loved this dish for the big flavour that isn’t typical to vegetarian dishes. A combination of comfort-food-cravings and a desire to have some kind of measure against other restaurants made me order the rather common shrimp-pesto pizza. Called “The Biltmore”, it advertised fresh pesto, tender shrimp, sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese. 

In supermarket items, ingredients are listed in the order of predominance in the dish.  If this was applied to the Biltmore Pizza, that ingredient list would be reversed.  There was enough cheese on this pizza to make Elvis ask for leftovers.  Sparse amounts of sundried tomatoes, shrimp, and pesto weren’t enough to make this dish memorable. Typically I love this flavour combination – but not in the ratios that Brown’s used. This one needs a bit more work.

We Woulda-Shoulda-Coulda ordered the Chocolate Pecan Pie with Whip Cream for dessert. Any restaurant that even lists that dish deserves a good review. Overall Brown’s was a good experience, and I’m looking forward to a visit in the near future!

Closer to home, the Langley Times’ reporter Natasha Jones stopped by the sales centre to see why cars have been lining 204th St. non-stop over the past few weeks. Turns out she was also quite impressed by what she saw.

Coming up… a little birdie told me that you might also see Time featured in New Local Home in the near future.  Let’s just hope no one catches a happy, new homeowner pulling a “Tom Cruise” in one of our new showhomes… shoemarks can be difficult to get off of couches!

Community spirit is such a cool thing to witness. We were out in Walnut Grove this morning at 7:3o am blowing up balloons to hand out to excited crowds – and we weren’t even the first ones there!  Hundreds came out to celebrate the passing of the Olympic Torch through Walnut Grove.

The Torchbearer was the the well-deserved winner of an essay contest at a local high school. Kudos to him! He made running, smiling, waving, and carrying a 3.5 lb torch for over a kilometre look easy.

Hundreds of people lined the streets and sidewalks, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the torch. Many groups of school children lined up 2-by-2 and made their way down to the intersection of 204th and 96th Ave. It was such an awesome day to be Canadian – we were so proud!
